Government Official Says MoD Investigating Security Risk from Chinese Cars, as Staff Told to Refrain from Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defense official has confirmed that the MoD is actively investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, while staff have been instructed to refrain from talking about classified information in any cars.

Security Guidance for Defence Staff

During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified material while riding in Chinese vehicles.

He said that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its vehicle pools, however stressed that safety is a concern in all modern vehicles.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
But regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is to avoid connecting MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing risks of surveillance that exist in every single vehicle, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the ministry to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Wider Security Background

This revelation comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the UK to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to public transit.

Additionally, a Russia intelligence vessel was reportedly directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

The broader security situation underscores the significance of robust protocols and caution in every aspects of government operations, from vehicle usage to discussions practices.
