Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a method that is highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across European nations.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
