A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable growth of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
